Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about the house, booking and staying in South Lake Tahoe.
Where is the house?
In the Tahoe Sierra neighborhood of the city of South Lake Tahoe, California. Restaurants and a brewpub are a few minutes' walk away, the lake is about a 5 minute drive, and Heavenly's ski lifts are about 10 minutes away. We share the exact address after booking.
How do I book, and why Houfy?
Book directly on Houfy. Our rates there are lower than on Airbnb.
How many people can stay?
The house sleeps 8: a king in the master bedroom, a queen and a double in the two downstairs bedrooms, and a double bed in the downstairs common area. City of South Lake Tahoe rules allow 6 adults plus up to 5 children aged 13 and under. The primary renter must be 25 or older.
What are the check-in and check-out times?
Check-in is from 3 PM and check-out is by 1 PM. We try to accommodate late check-out until 6 PM when there is no other booking that day. Check-in is self check-in with a keypad lock.
Is there a hot tub?
There is no outdoor hot tub. The master bathroom has an indoor jetted bathtub, plus a separate shower.
Is there air conditioning?
The house does not have air conditioning, but every room has a large ceiling fan. Summer in Tahoe is mild: there are only a handful of days a year when it gets warm enough to wish for AC, and then only for part of the afternoon. Nights at this elevation cool off quickly, so a slightly open window keeps the house comfortable for sleeping.
Where do we park? Do we need four-wheel drive?
There is a double garage plus room for two cars in the driveway. City rules allow parking on paved surfaces only. In winter, four-wheel drive is recommended but not required; if your car is not 4WD, carry chains. See our winter driving tips.
How far is the house from the ski resorts?
About 10 minutes to Heavenly, about 40 to 60 minutes to Kirkwood depending on the roads, and about an hour to Northstar. Details in our ski guide.
What is the Good Neighbor Contract?
The City of South Lake Tahoe requires every vacation rental guest to sign its VHR Good Neighbor Contract, which covers occupancy, quiet hours, parking and trash. After you book, we send you a filled-out copy to sign.
Are pets allowed?
No pets, please.
Is the house good for families with kids?
Yes. Kids love the game loft with the pool and foosball tables, and we have children's books and toys. The house is not infant-proofed and has no crib or high chair.
Is the kitchen stocked?
Yes, fully. We cook a lot here ourselves, so you will find cookware, spices, a Nespresso machine, a drip coffee maker and a coffee grinder. There is also a gas grill on the balcony off the living room.
Is there WiFi and a place to work?
Yes: high-speed internet, a desk and a laptop-friendly workspace.
Is there a fireplace?
Yes. The living room has a gas fireplace in a masonry surround, so there is no wood to haul in.
Are there cameras or noise monitoring?
There are three outdoor cameras only: two monitor snow levels, and one covers the driveway, garage and bear box, as required by the City of South Lake Tahoe. As also required by the city, a noise monitor alerts the manager if noise stays above 60 dB. There are no cameras inside the house.
What about trash and bears?
Tahoe has bears, so all trash goes in the bear-proof box outside, as required by the city. We explain recycling and pickup days in the house guide.
